Prayers in parliament are an important daily reminder that we must all ultimately answer to the higher authority of Almighty God. The prayers, which consist of the Lord's Prayer and a request for God's guidance, are an expression of the Christian foundation of our nation. According to the latest census, about 61% of Australians identify with Christianity.
Would you vote to support the continued opening of parliament with Christian prayers?
Harm minimisation has been one of the key principles of Australia's drug strategy since 1985. Harm minimisation measures include needle and syringe exchanges, injecting rooms, heroin prescription, methadone substitution, liberal cannabis laws and drug testing kits. This strategy has largely failed because it sustains drug users in their habit. by contrast, Sweden has shown that "drug free" policies can dramatically reduce the use of illicit drugs.
Would you support changing the "harm minimisation" focus of the current national drug policy to "harm preventions" - with a drug-free goal?
Poker machines were introduced in Victoria in 1991 without public consultation. The government and the gaming industry have grown richer, but Victorians are losing $8 million a day to pokies. About 40% of this loss comes from problem gambling, which can lead to poverty, suicide and family breakdown. Governments need to end their dependence on the revenue from problem gambling.
Would you support legislation to phase out poker machines in Victoria over a ten year period?
Bullying of any kind is never acceptable. But the Safe Schools Coalition Victoria "anti-bullying" program normalises homosexual and transgender behaviour. It could increase identity confusion, and has been linked with reverse bullying. By contrast, programs such as the CASSE Peaceful Schools program are successfully addressing the root causes of all bullying.
Would you recommend that schools replace the Safe Schools Coalition Victoria program with a program that encourages respect and courtesy for all?
Religious freedom is under threat, following proposals to weaken religious exemptions in the Equal Opportunity Act. Religious bodies could be required to prove that living in accord with their beliefs is an 'inherent requirement' for their staff (such as maths teachers in a Christian school) - potentially undermining the religious body's ethos.
Would you support freedom of religion in Victoria by voting against any 'inherent requirement' provision in the Equal Opportunity Act?
Euthanasia means the intentional killing of a patient, rather than providing treatment or palliative care. Switching off life support is not euthanasia. Evidence from the Netherlands, Oregon and Belgium shows that legalising euthanasia or assisted suicide has led to the deaths of persons who did not ask for euthanasia, or were not terminally ill, or were suffering treatable depression.
Would you vote against any bill that would legalise euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide?
The Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms Act 2006 has led to courts giving more rights to Victorian sex offenders and less protection to the community. in 2011, the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee (SARC) recommended repeal of the power given to judges to interpret all other laws in the light of the Charter rights - byt this change has not been implemented.
Would you vote to repeal the excessive power given to unelected judges in the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms Act?
Under Victoria's Abortion Law Reform Act, a health practitioner with a conscientious objection must refer a pregnant woman seeking an abortion to another practitioner without such an objection. A pharmacist must tell a customer where to obtain medication that can induce an abortion, even if the pharmacist has a conscientious objection.
Would you vote to amend Section 8 of Victoria's abortion laws to return freedom of conscience to health practitioners?
Children placed for adoption deserve the best possible care. Research evidence confirms the common sense view that children flourish best when raised by both a mother and a father. Allowing same-sex couples to adopt would intentionally deprive a child of the love of either a father or of a mother, and would be unfair to the child.
Would you vote against any bill that would allow same-sex couples to adopt children?
Many public libraries have refused to install filters to block hardcore pornography, terrorism and suicide promotion websites from their computers. Children have been exposed to such sites, despite claims of librarian supervision.
